Before Middle Ear Surgery

Once you have chosen surgery, you will need to prepare for it. Your health care provider will explain what to do and what to expect. Ask any questions you may have.

Risks and Complications

Your surgeon will tell you about the possible risks and complications of middle ear surgery. They can include:

  • Infection

  • Failure of a graft (patch, often made of tissue), donor bone, or prosthesis (a manmade part)

  • Further hearing loss, ringing in the ears, or dizziness

  • Facial nerve damage or numbness in the outer ear

  • A change in your sense of taste, or a dry mouth

Preparing for Surgery

To get ready for surgery, you may be told to do the following:

  • Schedule a presurgery checkup.

  • Take antibiotics or other medications if instructed.

  • Arrange for a ride home after surgery.

  • Avoid eating and drinking after the midnight before your surgery, or as instructed.

About Your Anesthesia

Anesthesia is medication that keeps you from feeling pain during surgery. An anesthesiologist will give you more details before your procedure. You may have either of the following:

  • General anesthesia to let you sleep during surgery

  • Local anesthesia with sedation to keep you pain-free and relaxed, but awake during surgery
